Spring Branch, Texas is a beautiful growing city in Comal County. It has a culture all of its own with the historical landmarks, campgrounds, and fairs. This town is located in the western area of Comal County along U.S. Highway 281. This is north of Bulverde and San Antonio, and west of Canyon Lake.

Brief History of Spring Branch

The first pioneer was Hans Heinrich Dietrich Knibbe who purchased an acre of land for a dollar in 1852. Throughout 1854 and 1856, the Knibbe family was joined by five additional families – Elbel, Porter, Imhoff, Horne, and Fuhrmann. Each of these six farms was located on the opposite side of Spring Creek. This was a small spring-fed creek that empties into the Guadalupe River after flowing 1.5 miles. This community initially lacked a name. However later it became known as Spring Branch when a post office was established on July 1, 1858. The stream was renamed “Spring Branch” as well.

Fun in the Texas Hill Country

The Texas Hill Country is the best place to be in the United States for the outdoors. There are lots of fun things to do! For natural and relaxing parks, the Guadalupe River State Park is thirteen miles west. This park rests between Kendall and Comal County with river access. This is convenient for swimming, fishing, tubing and canoeing with your family. There are also numerous activities on land, such as camping, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and bird watching. The miles of river frontage in the area make it a calm and relaxing getaway.

Knibbe Ranch is a great place to visit, and for larger events. Listen to live music, or break in your boots with some good old Texas Two-stepping. Ranches like this are ideal for family vacations or for holding large conferences.

Down the road from Spring Branch is Bulverde, Texas. One of my family’s favorite spots is Bulverde Community Park. It is a great place to relax with family outdoors, and they also hold many community events in the park like movies in the park!

School Districts

Families seeking a applicable school district to send their children can select one from the awesome Comal Independent School District. At the end of 2017, Comal ISD received an accountability rating of “Met Standard” from the Texas Education Agency. They are the only school district in the San Antonio metropolitan area to achieve a five-star rating for 2016! Comal also received a five-star rating from TXSmartSchools.org for 2015.

They have great schools for elementary, middle, and high school students. A few schools in the Comal County ISD are Mountain Valley Middle School, and Canyon Lake High School. Searching for school resources is important for anyone moving into the area, but can be a bit frustrating if you don’t know where to look. Take it from a local, and ask Kelly about the area when you’re searching for homes for sale!
